Poetry

 What is poetry?

For me, it's an art to convey a message by collected words, the poem tries to share the personal experiences of its writer.

Genres of poetry?

There are three types/genres in English poetry.

The first is narrative poetry,

we can define narrative poetry as poetry that tells a story and has elements of a story. e.g: "the raven" by Edgar Allen Poe.

The second one is dramatic poetry,

a poem where the speaker is someone other than the poet themselves, and often include dialogue. a dramatic monologue is often from a  fictional character's point of view. e.g: "Meeting at Night"  by Robert Browning.

and the last one is lyrical poetry,

expresses emotion, appeals to your senses, and often could be set as music. e.g: "winter"  by Shakesphere.

Indonesian poem.

Indonesian poem is classified into three categories according to the era of creation, Which are the old poem, modern poem, and contemporary poem.

1. Old poem (around 1920s).

Almost all old poems are bounded to follow the rules such as:

·         The amount of the word in 1 line

·         The amount of the line in 1 couplet

·         Rhyme

·         The amount of syllable in 1 line

·         Rhythmic

The old poem can be found in various forms such as mantra, gurindam (poe), syair (bardic), pantun, bidal, pepatah (aphorism), and many more.

2. Modern Poem

Modern poem is identified from the amount of line in every couplet. It does not use the same rules as the old poem, but more importantly the amount of the line. Any poem from 1920 until present is considered as modern poem.

3. Contemporary Poem.

The contemporary poem does no longer speak of how great the language of the poet. But it stresses more on the typography structure, the use of foreign words, and sometimes even harsh words.
